As in other belt drives, the torque from the driving V-pulley to the belt and from it to the driven pulley is carried out by frictional forces. But in the V-belt transmission, the side surfaces of the belt are the workers. In this case, the contact patch is much larger than in a flat belt. This means more and the friction force and, consequently, the transmitted torque. To increase the contact patch, it is not necessary to increase the diameter of the pulley.
